Twelve arrested for various crimes during crime prevention operations

Communications officer at Zonkizizwe SAPS Sgt Rufus Tema said the intelligence unit from the station alerted EMPD and immediately followed the information which led them to the suspect.

The partnership between Zonkizizwe SAPS, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and the community of Zonkizizwe yielded goods results as 12 suspects were apprehended for various crimes during crime prevention operations held from February 20 to February 23.

On February 20, Zonkizizwe SAPS Intelligence Unit received a tip-off from an anonymous source that somebody was roaming the streets of Zone Three, Zonkizizwe, with a suspected unlicensed firearm.

“Upon searching the 31-year-old suspect, a 9mm firearm and live ammunition were found. He was subsequently arrested. The firearm, which serial number is filed off, will be subject to ballistic testing to determine whether or not it was used in any crime,” said Tema.

He added that 11 more suspects, aged between 22 and 48 years, were arrested for various crimes, such as illegal possession of ammunition, intimidation, malicious damage to property, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily, house break-in and theft, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Some of the suspects appeared in court already, while others are expected to appear soon,” Tema said.
