Boxing club takes pride in its boxers’ success

Two boxers who train at the JD Malinga Boxing Club were promoted from amateur boxing to professional boxing on Saturday, February 1.

This follows their success in their recent fights that took place at Orlando Swimming Pool on the day.

The fights were organised by Boxing South Africa (BSA), which aimed to test amateur boxers from Gauteng to see whether they could be given an opportunity to ply their trade at a professional level.

Sduduzi Mthembu (22) and Sihle Ntilashe (19) from the JD Malinga Boxing Club in Katlehong did not disappoint as they defeated their opponents convincingly.

The two hard-working young boxers’ coach Thami Malinga, a former professional boxer himself, said they have been granted permission to fight for international titles.

“Firstly, I would like to congratulate Mthembu and Ntilashe. Their hard work paid off. As professional boxers they will now be paid for every match they take part in the future, which means entering the field now means business.

“They now qualify to contest against the best fighters in the world.

“Ntilashe now qualifies to contest for junior world titles u-63kg, while Mthembu qualifies to contest for light heavyweight u-78kg. They will fight according to their weights,” Malinga said.

Ntilashe said he was very happy because not every boxer gets such an opportunity.

“It means my hard work, coming to the gym every day, has finally paid good dividends. I will get an opportunity to show the rest of the world what I am capable of doing,” said Ntilashe.

Mthembu said this is a very good opportunity given to them by the Malinga Brothers.

“When I came to Gauteng from KZN in 2018, my aim was to fulfill my dream of becoming a professional boxer and bettering my future, since I am passionate about boxing.

“This means I have big shoes to fill since I am following in the footsteps of the Malinga Brothers, who were professional boxers and world champions in their day. And I am so happy to be trained by one of them. I am getting proper training,” Mthembu said.
