Panyaza Lesufi launches seventh specialisation school

Since his appointment as the MEC of Education in Gauteng in 2014, Panyaza Lesufi has initiated the establishment of specialisation schools for young people.

On August 20, the Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation (SOS), formerly known as Katlehong Technical School, based in Goba section, became the seventh school in Gauteng to be launched by Lesufi. The school will focus on manufacturing, logistics, and transport.

Addressing learners at the school’s assembly, Lesufi said the school will now respond to the skills shortages and the unemployment crisis among the youth in the country.

“The school now has facilities that will equip learners with the skills and knowledge to give them the best chances of success in life. It will provide learners with needed workplace experience, learnerships, artisanship, and entrepreneurial skills,” he said.

He added that this will minimise chances of learners leaving township schools to seek for better education in the suburbs.

One of the guests who came to the event was the city of Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina.

Delivering his speech, Masina said learners of Katlehong are very privileged as they no longer need to go to TVET Colleges to get mechanic skills.

“Katlehong learners will now get all the mechanic, learnerships, as well as entrepreneurial skills here at the school,” he said.

He also pleaded with the community not to vandalise the facilities during protests. “If people are angry because of the absence of electricity they must come to our offices instead.”

Learners of the school entertained the crowd with music, dance and poetry.

Learners and teachers from other schools of specialisation such as Soshanguve, Rhodes, Motlodi, Phelindaba, Edward Phatudi and Keitus Nkondo also attended the launch of the school.
