Pull Together senior citizens do well in elders’ games

Ekurhuleni South Golden Games for elderly people was held at Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong on July 5.

The elders from Ekurhuleni South took part in 17 sporting codes, including the duck walk; ring the stick; jukskei; rugby ball throw; passing the ball; track events of 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m; brisk walk; dress-up; goal shooting; ball relay; ball passing; paging the washing; 100m relays and ladies’ versus men’s soccer.

The initiative by the Gauteng Department of Sport, in partnership with Ekurhuleni Sport and Recreation and the Department of Social Development, went well, with elderly people enjoying themselves on the day.

According to Gustaff Tselapedi, the purpose of the event was to select a strong team that will represent Ekurhuleni South in future golden game tournaments.

He said the team that will represent Ekurhuleni South has already been selected, while the team that will represent Ekurhuleni North is yet to be selected.

“After all three have been selected, we are going to bring them together and select the Ekurhuleni Golden Games Team at Boksburg Stadium on July 26,” said Tselapedi.

He said the team will proceed to the provincial event, where all teams will play against each other in Tshwane on September 6 with the aim of selecting the team that will represent Gauteng at the national level.

“The Gauteng team will travel to the Eastern Cape to compete against all eight provinces. The date is yet to be announced for this event, which will run for the whole week,” he said.

The team from Spruitview, Pull Together Senior Citizens Club, won three of the categories they took part in. The winners of the categories are: Siphiwe Kunene (dress up), Pinky Ntshalintshali (duck walk), and Grace Shilubani, Louisa Nzimande, Dumazile Jele, Phindile Khumalo and Evelyn Nemaunzeni (ring the stick).
