DA urges residents to protect their property

The DA was referring to the school whose two Grade R classrooms were burnt down on July 4 during the so-called service delivery protests by the residents over a lack of electricity.

Lebo More, a DA MP, and constituency head in Katlehong, says her party condemns in the strongest terms the torching and vandalising of Katlehong Primary School “by thugs” who pretended to be protesters.

More said those who destroyed the school took advantage of the untenable power disruptions, and in so doing laid the blame on residents of Extension 9.

“The DA understands the frustrations the residents are faced with over poor service delivery in Ekurhuleni, but such situations must not be allowed to be exploited by opportunistic thugs,” More said.

She pleaded with the law enforcement agencies to launch a manhunt to apprehend the suspects. She said this must happen as soon as possible.

“We urge the community to help the police to investigate this matter by reporting any information they may have, as well as the identities of the suspects.”

DA media officer Charity Moyo said the party has a zero tolerance on the destruction and burning down of government’s infrastructure meant to serve communities. She pleaded with the police to apprehend “these thugs” who must face the full might of the law.

“We also urge all community members to take ownership and safeguard these precious resources,” Moyo said.

The school principal Ben Sidwaba said the school has a contingency plan to ensure that learning was not compromised.

“We managed to accommodate learners to the school’s laboratory, so that teaching continues without any interruptions,” he said.

Sidwaba could not be drawn to comment on what the long-term plan for the school might be regarding the repairs to damaged classes, saying he is restricted on what he can comment on.
