Rather teach children to avoid drugs

I was shocked to read in one of the daily newspapers that schools will soon be introducing sex education as a subject.

As a parent, I think this is the most shocking thing the Department of Education has ever thought of. To us as blacks, this is a rather taboo issue to be taught to learners at local schools.

Already, we have enough sexual abuse and violence. To add sex education as part of the curriculum would only encourage it even more. Why not introduce the dangers of drug abuse as a subject? This is an issue that causes misery in families in the townships.

I think the Department of Education should be looking at educating our children about the dangers of drugs and its effects on the youth, rather than teaching learners about sex.
