AFCKO team competes in East London

The quartet flew out on May 4, participated in the tournament and returned the same evening.

African Full Contact Karate Organisation (AFCKO) flew four of their karatekas to East London, Eastern Cape, to represent the organisation at the Kyokushinkan Karate Tournament on May 4.

AFCKO is a non-profit organisation established in 2016 by shihan Thulane Sibisi from Thokoza. Its main objectives are to assist full-contact karate clubs with administration, marketing, and fund-raising.

The quartet was made up of sempai Khensani Baloyi, sempai Thando Masha, sempai Siyabonga Pitso and sempai Thabang Mothibatsila.

Baloyi represented the organisation in the u-40kg female category while Masha represented AFCKO in the u-50kg female category. Pitso and Mothibatsila both fought in the u-50kg male category.

Sibisi said all four students were selected because of their hard work, commitment to the sport and dedication shown to the organisation, as well as the discipline they have shown since they started karate.

“The organisation gave these students an opportunity of a lifetime by flying them to East London. It was their first time flying in an aeroplane,” said Sibisi.

Mothibatsila was so happy to be given this opportunity after only three years of practising karate.

He said nobody thought that a one-day karate would give them the opportunity of a lifetime.

“I would like to thank shihan Sibisi for believing in us. I promise I will never disappoint the organisation for trusting us,” said Mothibatsila.

“I am sure people are starting to see the importance of karate in our community, thanks to the efforts of shihan Sibisi.”

Sibisi said the quartet did not disappoint as Baloyi, from Thokoza Dojo, won her category.
