Comrades preparatory run held by KAC

Runners were asked to donate R100, which went towards putting petrol in three seconding vehicles and a sweep car, and food and drinks for runners along the route.

Katlehong Athletics Club (KAC), in partnership with Nike Factory inl Chris Hani Crossing Mall, hosted a 60km Comrades Marathon preparatory run on April 27.

The slow long-distance run started at 5am from the Nike Factory and ended there too.

The route profile is similar to the Comrades run.

For safety reasons, runners wore reflective and bright-coloured clothes to increase their visibility on the road.

This year’s Comrades Marathon will see the club’s president, Isaac Mabula, who will be turning 61, complete his 30th Comrades Marathon, which is equal to the record of Bruce Fordyce before he retired.

Mabula’s medals tally since he started to take part in the Comrades Marathon includes two Bill Rowan medals, two Vic Clapham medals and 21 bronze medals.

KAC chairperson Hloni Motloung said KAC is expected to do well at this year’s Comrades Marathon. Clr Robert Pienaar is looking to follow in the footsteps of former mayors Duma Nkosi and Mondli Gungubele by running the Ultimate Human Race.

“April is a high mileage month for Comrades runners, which means a runner is expected to run at least 100km per week and taper down in May. This training run offers an opportunity for runners to test their fitness and readiness for the Comrades Marathon, which will take place in June from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal,” said Motloung.

This training was for ultra runners only. Other start-up runners can join the 5km fun run/walk on July 21 at the Huntersfield Stadium.

Motloung said he was very impressed by the way the runners conducted themselves.

“I am convinced that they are going to well during the Comrades Marathon,” Motloung said.

Nike Factory donated some of their products to Mabula.
