High density operation in the EMPD southern region nets 23 drunk drivers

EMPD operations shall continue unabated until the traffic volumes are back to normal on Wednesday, April 24.

In view of the Easter long weekend high traffic volumes, the EMPD intensified operations by embarking on high density special operations in an earnest endeavor to ensure safety for all the road users in the City of Ekurhuleni.

According to chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, the special operations commenced as early as Wednesday evening (April 17), targeting all feeder roads and arterials carrying heavy traffic volumes with the focus on those not adhering to the rules of the road.

The Chief of Police Isaac Jabulani Mapiyeye visited all the static and roving roadblocks conducted which were also aimed at crime prevention in the areas of Germiston, Boksburg and Alberton.

“This is our earnest endevour to ensure that a safe road user environment for all in the city is made possible and thus no mercy will be shown to anyone who fails to observe the rules of the road or engages in any criminality”, said Chief Mapiyeye.

Eleven were nabbed in Boksburg, eight apprehended in Tokoza and one arrested in Primrose.

“During the operations the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit members distributed over 400 pamphlets on road safety to road users,” said  Kgasago.

“Spot summonses totaling 318 were issued for various offences. Three public transport vehicles and eight private vehicles were discontinued for serious defects with two completely unroadworthy impounded.”
