Afcko karatekas take part in Matlosane Cup in Klerksdorp

Afcko took a team made up of 20 learners to the event and did not disappoint.

African Full Contact Karate Organisation (Afcko) from Katlehong attended the Matlosane Cup in Klerksdorp, North West Province, on March 9.

The tournament was very tough and consisted of quality karatekas from all over the country.

Sensei shihan Thulani Sibisi, who is also the founder of Afcko, said: “Full-contact karate in our country is becoming competitive. It is now at international standards. It shows the level of commitment from our instructors and the development programmes we are running in our townships,” said Sibisi.

Afcko’s up-and-coming students Thokozani Sibeko, Ntokozo Mazibuko, Thadiwa Mokono and Khushonga Mthonyelwa had an opportunity to show off their talent during the event.

Sibisi appreciated the level of commitment shown by the four students. “They are so committed to the karate programme.”

“Mokono did well; he participated until he was defeated in the semi-finals.

“This shows the level of commitment he has. And I would like to see more young students like him show dedication to the sport.”

These students train with sensei Mbali Msomi from Katlehong Dojo. He once won the IKKF-World Championship at Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza and went on to win the fifth IKKF World Tournament in Russia.

During the event in Klerksdorp, Msomi participated in the women’s open division for the first time after winning the tournament in Russia.

The pressure was on her to showcase her ability after winning big events, both locally and abroad.

The Afcko team took extra classes on weekends and a night training session prior to the event and it paid off.

The next event will be the Afcko Tournament on May 25 at the Thokoza Auditorium.

Sibisi said they are pleading for support from the community members from all over the City of Ekurhuleni.

“This will be one of the biggest events ever. We would be happy if people could come in their numbers,” said Sibisi.

The entry to the event is free. Afcko will be hosting countries like Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho and Botswana.

They are looking for sponsors to assist in hosting this prestigious event.
