One of the founders of Kasi Art Project, Prince Tino, said physical inactivity is widely recognised as a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, cancer, diseases of lifestyle and obesity.

“Subsequent to this, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a global strategy on unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity and high and frequent consumption of alcohol. This strategy calls for the implementation of interventions that prevent the onset of chronic diseases because of a certain lifestyle,” said Tino.

Tino also said: “Kasi Art Projects will embark on a drive to promote healthy lifestyles and physical wellbeing through intimate live music sessions and music festivals as instruments to convey the message of health awareness.”

According to co-founder Mlungisi Makhedama the Health Walk Awareness formed part of the developed strategies to reduce non-communicable diseases.

“The initiative encourages all South Africans to take responsibility for their own health by engaging in physical activities such as walking, regular exercises and other extramural activities. In order to maintain health, at least 30 minutes of physical activity should be performed daily,” Makhedama said.

The main objectives of the event were to promote physical activity initiatives, increase population-wide participation in physical activity, increase participation in physical activity through events and other socio-cultural forums, promote healthy behaviour and lifestyles, address health-related issues such as unhealthy diet, smoking, stress, depression and social isolation.

More than 276 people registered and participated in the walk on the day.

Five different organisations including Tshepo Women Help Centre, Thuso Sizo Organisation, Yahap Organisation, Clinix Botshelong-Empilweni Private Hospital and Ekurhuleni Department of Health attended the event to do health screening after the walk.

The next awareness walk will take place on August 3 at the same venue.
