KSG urges government to fulfil its reparation commitment

National organiser and board member of KSG Noma-Rusia Bonase said they wanted the president to take notice of their demands in their memorandum.

While members of the community listened to a speech by President Cyril Ramaphosa in Vosloorus on February 6, members of the Khulumani Support Group (KSG) staged a protest march outside the venue where he addressed the residents.

“As the East Rand and national members of KSG, we ask our president and our chosen government to respond to our repeated demands for reparation for the gross human right violations we suffered under apartheid. It is now more than 20 years that we have been hoping and praying for relief.

“The Government of National Unity (GNU) started the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) after 1994 but it lasted for a very short period of time.

“As a result, very few people got an opportunity to get justice from the TRC,” said Bonase.

“Most of us as victims did not get a chance to appear before the commission. That is why we are here to hand over the memorandum to the president with a list of our grievances. We hope he is going to listen to us since we as KSG are the ones who protected him when he was in danger of being assassinated during apartheid,” Bonase said.

The grievances in the memorandum include the following:

• Roll out interim reparation to victims and survivors our government promised redress by March 21 this year.

• Put in place a process to provide final reparation to all those who have waited in vain for too long, before our votes are cast on

May 8.

On behalf of the president, Deputy President David Mabuza received the memorandum from the members of the KSG while Ramaphosa addressed the residents.
