Shoes donation for needy learners

Nyembe appeared unexpectedly at the school on the day with good tidings that brought a smile to the learners - a donation of 38 pairs of brand new school shoes.

Destitute learners from Izibuko Primary School in Nhlapo Section, Katlehong, went to school as usual on February 26 not knowing that a Good Samaritan Buhle Nyembe would be donating the much-needed windfall that would change their lives for the better.

Interviewed by Kathorus MAIL, Nyembe said she was driven by passion for education which motivated her to make the donation. She said it pained her to see children stay away from class because they did not have school shoes to wear.

“Winter is around the corner. Most learners with no school shoes do not go to school in winter because of their fear of cold weather. So I felt a need to make sure that no learner misses school because of cold weather this coming winter,” Nyembe said.

Why did she choose Izibuko Primary School? She chose the school because it was her childhood school. “This is where I began my schooling life. I attended my Grade One in this very same school.”

Also, she added, she wanted all the learners to look the same despite their different family backgrounds.

School principal Bongani Ngwenya was joyous, adding that the gesture would help improve the lot of learners who attend school wearing broken shoes, or with no shoes at all, adding that they would have no excuse for not attending school in winter.

“They will look no different from other learners,” said Ngwenya.

Ngwenya said the school has devised a criterion for the shoes allocation.

“Class teachers have a lists of all destitute learners,” concluded Ngwenya.

A member of the school’s welfare committee Lindiwe Molaba said it did not feel good to see learners attend school without wearing school shoes.

“It affects the process of teaching and learning because these learners get mocked by other learners. When this happens those who are offended end up in tears. As a result you as a teacher have to spend almost the rest of the period comforting them or trying to find a suitable censure for the offenders,” said Molaba.

Deputy principal Mbulawa Msimang thanked Nyembe for her act of goodwill.

“I hope this will create a good relationship between her and the school,” said Msimang.
