Katlehong SAPS warn Uber drivers of new hijacking trend

The Katlehong and Thokoza police stations have been inundated with cases and reports of hijackings involving Uber drivers.

Katlehong SAPS and Thokoza SAPS station commanders urge Uber drivers to be alert at all times, as a new hijacking trend is doing the rounds in the areas.

According to the information provided to the stations, suspects request an Uber only to hijack the drivers upon arrival.

“Victims have described cases where, upon their arrival, drivers find themselves being held at gun point by the suspects who eventually drive off in the car,” said Capt Mega Ndobe, corporate communications official for the Katlehong police.

“This is an ongoing crime in Katlehong, Thokoza and surrounding areas.

“At this point no one has been arrested, and police are investigating.”

Both station commanders are appealing to anyone who may have any information which can assist in the investigation to report the matter to them.

“We are striving for a safer Kathorus, people must feel safe when driving around Kathorus,” said Ndobe.

“We have since discovered that this crime has gained popularity in Vosloorus as well.

“Drivers are advised to go to any local police station for an escort, in order to minimise this kind of crime.”
