VHCS celebrates new year with beneficiaries

Vosloorus Home Care Services (VHCS) held a ceremony at the J Dumani Hall in Vosloorus on January 19 to welcome its beneficiaries to the new year.

VHCS is a non-profit organisation formed by Hilda Lingane (a retired nurse) in 1994 and offers home-based care to ill community members.

Sonia Mashaba, VHCS project manager, said: “When the organisation was established in 1994 at the Methodist Church its services were confined to chronically ill senior members of the church only. But being passionate and caring about the community, Lingane expanded the project to reach community members who suffer from TB, HIV, assisting orphans, people with disabilities by providing wheelchairs and walking aids, and fighting against gender-based violence.”

Over the years, VHCS has grown into a formidable organisation providing a wide variety of services.

“Furthermore, the organisation is currently functioning in an integrated format administrated by a project management team as opposed to the conventional executive committee,” said Mashaba.

On January 19, the VHCS team led by Mashaba, administrator Benny Machaua, community care workers and Kusile Hygiene hosted a welcome to the new year party for the beneficiaries to thank the community members for working hand-in-hand through the years.

The organisation also gave back to the community by giving away food parcels and served lunch to the community members who attended.

Mashaba said even though the number of beneficiaries did not reach their expectation, they still believe the event was a success.

“We accomplished the mission of the day,” Mashaba explains.

Mashaba pleaded to any capable sponsors to come forward and assist them.

“There is a lot we still need to do, including finding a shelter we can call the home to adults, where we can help all under one roof. We also need sponsors to assist us with money so we can expand our help to each and every needy member of our society,” concludes Mashaba.
