Getting ready for the KFC Mini-Cricket Festival

The hardworking cricket guru from East Field in Vosloorus said he has been teaching cricket at different pre-schools since January 9 when the schools reopened.

Ten pre-schools from Vosloorus are preparing for the KFC Mini-Cricket Festival that will take place in March, Isaac Phele, the head of Vosloorus Cricket Club (VCC) mini-cricket, told Kathorus MAIL on January 16.

Phele said primary schools from the township will also take part, but in their own category.

He said the purpose of the event is to teach the basics of cricket at a grassroots level.

“The only way we can make children from the township love cricket is to teach it at a grassroots level. We will focus on the following basic skills of cricket: eye and hand coordination, betting skills, bowling and fielding, as well as wicketkeeping,” said Phele.

The training sessions are going to benefit both pre-school learners and their teachers.

Learners are going to gain the advantage of knowing all the basics of cricket before they get to high school, something that is very rare for children from the township.

Teachers are going to gain officiating skills. They will officiate the training sessions in the absence of officials assigned by KFC Mini-Cricket.

Phele said this is one of KFC Mini-Cricket’s ways of improving the sport in townships.

“They are determined to see young learners from townships grow from strength to strength and develop a love for the sport. They even supported the programme with equipment. They also supported growing township cricket coaches with some coaching lessons,” said Phele.

Pre-schools benefitting from these training sessions are Bahlengeni Pre-School, Khanyisa Pre-School, Independent Minds Academy, Sunshine Daycare and Pre-School, Teddy Bear Pre-School, Sunrise to Dawn Day and Aftercare, Hunabi Pre-School, Phindi Pre-School, Guguliyanda Pre-School and Little Angels Pre-School.

More pre-schools who are interested in taking part can contact Phele on 063 160 1287.

Katlehong will not be taking part as they run their own programme.
