Erasmus Monareng Secondary School aims high

Deputy principal Phumzile Motha said the school was capable of even better results.

Erasmus Monareng Secondary School held a breakfast meeting with its stakeholders to celebrate the achievements of the matric learners of 2018 after the school achieved position two in Vosloorus, moving from moved from a 60.8 per cent pass in 2017 to 88.32 per cent this year,

The meeting took place at the school’s premises on Friday, January 18.

Wiseman Langa, the deputy chairperson of the school governing body (SGB) that was elected in March last year, said they had managed to secure sponsorship for the school, which helped it to achieve good academic results.

“Our learners do not pay school fees. We depend on the support from our sponsors. Today’s event was a sign of our gratitude to our stakeholders and to further strengthen our relationship with them. Without them we wouldn’t be celebrating these results today,” said Langa.

SGB chairperson Laurance Kwenda said they appreciate the support they received from the sponsors. However, there is still a lot that needs to be done at the school.

“We still need to fix toilets and finish painting the school, as the paint donated to us on Mandela Day is finished.

“We would like to have smart boards in all the classrooms, buy uniforms for the school athletics team and the kitchen staff, fence off the school and build soccer and netball fields on the premises,” said Kwenda.

He said they would appreciate any help from sponsors.

School principal Sharon Maboa was excited about the learners’ results.

“Most of the learners come from one of the townships where most of the people earn a very low income. Others even come from the nearest informal settlement where there are few or no resources, such as electricity, to study. But we managed to get position two in Vosloorus and moved from 60.8 per cent in 2017 to 88.32 per cent this year,” said Maboa.

“If it was not for overcrowding, school results could improve. Our current ratio is 1:54 instead of 1:34. At least if our ratio could be 1:40 our teachers could work well with the children and improve the pass rate.”

Rio Williams, the community representative of the Mental Healthcare Review Board in Gauteng, said they wanted Erasmus Monareng Secondary School to be able to compete with the best schools in the suburbs.

“In order to achieve that, we need to treat the children like our own. We must confront children who misbehave, such as smoking while wearing their school uniform. We must also discipline them if we find them gambling or playing dice outside school while they are supposed to be in class learning,” said Williams.

Representatives from FNB Chris Hani Mall, Kathorus Spar, Johannesburg Vosloorus Taxi Association, Eggbert, Rampcorp, Shongololo Printers, Sanza Tent, Dawn Books and Naledi Mall attended the event.
