One suspect arrested for business robbery

The communications officer at Zonkizizwe SAPS, Sgt Rufus Tema, said immediately after the case was reported to them the detectives from the station started with the investigation.

One male suspect (32) was arrested for business robbery at Shoprite U-Save and Shoprite Zone 3 by Zonkizizwe SAPS on October 10.

According to a 23-year-old U-Save business manager, it was business as usual at the shop when suddenly three armed male suspects forced their way into the shop.

“One of the suspects allegedly held the staff and customers at gunpoint while the other two demanded money from cashiers. “After taking an undisclosed amount of money from the tills, a cellphone, airtime vouchers and packets of cigarettes, the suspects fled the scene,” said the manager.

The communications officer at Zonkizizwe SAPS, Sgt Rufus Tema, said immediately after the case was reported to them the detectives from the station started with the investigation.

“Their investigation led them to Hadebe Section in Katlehong where one of the suspects was found inside the car believed to have been used as a get-away car in the robbery. Other suspects are still at large, but arrests are expected to be made soon.”

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old suspect was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm in the street in Zone 4.

Tema said the detectives were busy with investigations when they noticed the suspect with a protruding object on his waist.

“The suspect was stopped and allowed the police to search him. A pistol, with the serial number filed off and an empty magazine, were recovered and the suspect confessed that he does not have a license to possess it. He was immediately arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The firearm will be put through a ballistic process to determine whether or not it was used in the commission of any crime,” said Tema.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in due course.
