Police catch hijacking suspect

Man arrested in connection with the hijacking of a vehicle in Cleveland.

A Mozambican suspect wanted for hijacking a vehicle in Cleveland in June was arrested in Motloung Section in Katlehong on recently.

According to a statement released by the head of communications for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the white Toyota Hilux was hijacked by a group of unknown men on June 25 in Cleveland.

Although the hijacked vehicle was recovered the same day by the SAPS members law enforcers searched for the suspects for some time before making any arrests.

The EMPD Public Order Policing Unit members assisted the Katlehong North SAPS members made the arrest after receiving information from the community, which lead them to one of the suspects – holed up in Motloung Section in Katlehong.

The 37-year -old man was cornered and handcuffed.

He was later detained at the Katlehong Police Station on charges of car hijacking.

He appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where his case was postponed for a bail application.

Kgasago assured the public that the hunt is still on for the suspect’s accomplices.
