KAC hosted sanitary drive run

As part of its community upliftment programme, Katlehong Athletic Club (KAC) hosted a charity run on Saturday, March 24, to donate sanitary towels for needy school-going girls.

KAC hosted a 10km club run in Katlehong and participants ran around the streets of Katlehong, starting from Moleleki section, in their club colours.

The run ended at the same venue.

KAC chairman Hloni Motloung said the campaign to donate collect sanitary towels was a success.

“We launched this campaign a week ago but as of today – March 24 – we have already collected 160 packs,” said an excited Motloung.

He said they still want more.

“No participating fee was paid by runners but instead they brought packs of sanitary pads. Now we want the community to come to the party and help us collect more,” said Motloung.

“These sanitary towels will be donated to local schools in the community to ensure that we keep a girl child at school and instil a sense of dignity and pride,” Motloung added.

He went on to add that their intention is to ensure that every girl child in need of the product can go to the staff room to get sanitary pads from their teacher and be able to continue lessons.

He said as KAC they do not want girls to miss school if they are on their periods.

Famous singer Refilwe “Relo” Makhubo, of Skwatta Kamp, joined in the run and she brought dozens of packs of sanitary towels to donate.

KAC is pleading with the community to rally behind such initiatives, which are aimed at empowering the community and young people in tough economic times.

Motloung also pleaded with community members who are willing to support the initiative to contact KAC on the Katlehong Athletics Club’s Facebook page or visit them during their training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Huntersfield Stadium at 5.30 pm.

KAC had collected 250 packs of sanitary pads by Tuesday, March 27, thanks to participation from the community.
