South Africa celebrates Arbor week in September. It is also Heritage Month.
The MMC of Environment and Waste Management, Clr Ndosi Shongwe, said the municipality will use the occasion to share the values and importance of trees for tourism and livelihoods.
“We will also address the threats to indigenous trees.
“This year’s theme focuses on the country’s champion trees which include the oldest, largest and culturally significant trees,” Cllr Shongwe said.
Participating secondary schools include Sijabulile, Thokothaba and Landulwazi Secondary Schools. On the primary schools list will be: Umkhathizwe, RP Maphanzela and Khehlekile Primary Schools.
Clr Shongwe said she will also hand over dignity packs to girl children of Sijabulile Secondary School.
