Eden Park chess team takes first place

Eden Park Secondary School's chess team is the pride and joy of the school.

EDEN PARK – The team obtained a first place when they recently competed in the u.18 competition at HoĆ«rskool Oosterlig, in the district finals.

“Getting to the finals was no easy task,”said the proud coach, NM Bas.

”We played against very strong teams, but have won all our matches since May, this year.

”We won 6-0 against HoĆ«rskool Alberton, 5-1 against HoĆ«rskool Dinamika, beat Bracken High 5-1, Alberton High 4-2 and Marais Viljoen with 4-2.”

Playing in the district finals, the team obtained six points in the first round but lost 4-2 against Thuto-Lesedi High School in the second round. They went on to defeat Katlehong High 5-1 in the third round and Hoƫrskool Oosterlig 5-1 in the fourth round.

This team of seven enthusiastic young men started playing chess while attending Opelweg Primary School.

They talk with pride about their coach at Opelweg Primary, who taught them the game and turned them into masters of the game.
