Vosloorus SAPS sends strong message to criminals

“Our aim is to make sure that our community is safe out there and to make sure they sleep peacefully knowing that the criminals are are locked up behind the bars.

The Vosloorus South African Police Service (SAPS) made 63 arrests between October 10 and October 17.

According to SAPS Vosloorus spokesperson Piet Rossouw, as SAPS they want to send a clear message to criminals out there that they are totally against any form of crime.

“Our aim is to make sure that our community is safe out there and to make sure they sleep peacefully knowing that the criminals are are locked up behind the bars.

“People must know that as the SAPS we can’t win the fight against crime if we fight it alone. We need them in our corner to support us by reporting any form of crime that they are aware of and we won’t reveal their names.”

People can report crime on the following numbers:

· Station commander: 076 205 2043 (it works 24 hours a day).

· Crime Stop: 08600 10111.

· SMS: 32211.

· Colonel Solly Phago: 082 822 7752.

Rossouw also sent a message to people who buy stolen goods.

“People who buy stolen goods are guiltier than criminals because they are the ones who are opening up markets for criminals. If they stop buying stolen goods they will close market for criminals.

“If we find people buying stolen goods, we will arrest and charge them and they will face the law. I advise them to report if they see someone selling what seem to be stolen goods,” he said.

Among the arrests that were made were:

· Malicious damage to property (4)

· Assault common and malicious damage to property (1)

· Malicious damage to property (1)

· Theft of motor vehicle (1)

· Drunk and driving (4)

· Drunk in public (6)

· Murder (1)

· Assault (2)

· Possession of drugs (1)

· Shoplifting (6)

· Warrant of arrest (1)

· Common robbery (2)

· Contempt of court (3)

· Housebreaking and theft (2)

· Theft of laptop (1)

· Armed robbery (1)

· Attempted housebreaking with the intent unknown to the prosecutor (1)

· Assault and malicious damage to property (1)

Rossouw also said that if community members are aware of any corrupt police officers who are working with criminals, must phone the corruption line: 0800701701.

To the victims of crime, Rossouw had a message for them: “It is a reality that the country we are living in is affected by crime but we are working hard to make sure that crime comes to an end. If you have been victimised by any kind of crime you must contact the Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) at any police station. There are professional people who can assist you after any form of crime against you,” concluded Rossouw.
