Keen cricket player and enthusiast, Isaac Phele, has taken it upon himself to groom youngsters for cricket from as young as pre-school through school and right up to club level.

Showcasing the prowess of his young protégés during a training session at the Vosloorus Stadium last Friday afternoon during one of his developmental programmes, the 35-year-old Phele told Kathorus MAIL that he has undertaken to guide his Grade R learners from their early school days right through primary and high school to club level.

“We are training future cricket stars and I believe the earlier we start them the better it will be for cricket in South Africa,” explained an excited Phele as he posed with three of his best minor cricket stars with the medals.

Phele has involved several crèches around Kathorus and the response from the pre-school teachers has given him hope that cricket has the potential to grow among young black cricket enthusiasts in the townships. “We are taking it one step at a time and our aim is to get as many crèches and schools involved in order to create an interest in the game among young students,” said Phele.
