Fabulous reads: Satisfying revenge-fueled thriller returns

Book review – Even by Andrew Grant

Even, Andrew Grant, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781529054514

IF you are looking for a fast-paced thriller, fueled by adrenaline and revenge, than look no further. It blew my mind, not only to discover that this was Andrew Grant’s debut novel but that it had also been originally published back in 2009.

The book introduces us to David Trevellyan, a Royal Navy intelligence operative who has just completed a mission in New York. On his way back to his hotel, he stumbles upon what appears to be the body of a homeless man. As he crouches down to inspect the body, police pounce, and he is immediately fingered as the number-one suspect. Then five other bodies are discovered.

Soon, things become even more complicated when Trevellyan’s liaison officer, Tanya, requests that he delve into the mystery as a favour to her brother. What he uncovers is a deadly conspiracy with equally fatal consequences.

Trevellyan is a total maverick, and I was amused at how he delved into the case by ignoring all the rules. He has no patience for the legal and formal guidelines that the FBI, who are also investigating the murders, have to follow.

What particularly kept me engaged was how intertwined all of the events and characters in the book are. I was often left gobsmacked when a new link was revealed. The complex storyline is complemented by an easy yet very descriptive writing style. I could picture every event clearly in my mind.

The dry humour Grant bestows on Trevellyan not only breaks the tension but suits the character very well. I just could not put the book down. – Frans Smit – 5/5 stars
