New Nursery takes root

The Keep Westville Beautiful has extended their work to their new nursery, The Garden Birds.

BRANCHING out to help their community, the Keep Westville Beautiful organisation has launched a nursery, The Garden Birds. Located on Syringa Road, the nursery opened their gates for the first time on Saturday, June 25.
Keep Westville Beautiful is an organisation that works to keep the area clean through cleaning and maintaining verges, clearing waterways and pavements, and picking up litter.

Liesel Kruger of the organisation said the nursery was an idea to extend their work which was brought to life by the help of Round Table.

“Round Table is a Westville organisation that is involved in different community projects, and they approached us and offered a space. We wanted to start a nursery a while ago, but we had difficulties finding space. They offered us space because the nursery was going to be a community thing,” she said.

Kruger said the nursery is to carry on with the work that they already do. “The proceeds are set to go back to the organisation in keeping Westville beautiful. The nursery will also provide jobs for the people who will be working in the nursery,” she said.

PJ Storm, who is also part of the Keep Westville Beautiful nursery, said they are happy to be working with Lindo who is passionate about plants. “We decided to give him a chance to see if he could work with this many plants – he planted about 1 200 plants himself, which he got from his village in Ndwedwe and transported here. We started out with his plants, and he is currently planting more. Some plants are also from local indigenous planters,” she said.

Storm said they were surprised by the turnout of people at their opening on Saturday. “The idea was to test if the community would be interested. “We started putting out banners and announcing on social media, and the community came out in their numbers to a point where more stock was needed.”

The organisation said they are happy to keep their area clean as it adds value to their properties.
“Some people are home and business owners – how clean the area is contributes to property values. It also keeps the place safe for families and children,” they said.

Various plants can be found in the nursery on 9 Syringa Road, and it is open from Thursday to Sunday from 9:00 to 12:00. More information can be found on the Keep Westville Beautiful Facebook page.
