MORE than 23 000 venues will be opened this weekend, September 18-19, between 08.00 and 17.00 for voter registrations.
To date more than 150 000 eligible voters have registered online via the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) website or via the app. If you have already registered but your home address and voting station has changed, you will need to register, however proof of residence is not required.

Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, chief electoral officer for the IEC, Sy Mamabolo, encouraged all eligible South African citizens to register to vote.
“We call on every eligible South African citizens to register to vote this weekend, and to use this opportunity to amend their details should they have changed their address,” he said.
Before you head off to a venue in your ward, take note of the following requirements.
In order to register you must:
- Be a South African citizen;
- Be at least 16 years old (you can only vote from age 18);
- Have a green, bar-coded ID book; smartcard ID; or valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC)

- On September 18 and 19 at a venue in your ward
- At your local IEC office
What documents do I need to apply for registration?
- Green, bar-coded ID book;

- Valid Temporary Identity Certificate
- No other forms of ID can be accepted. Only original documents (no copies) are accepted.
How do I know if or where I’m registered?
- SMS your ID number to 32810 (R1.00 per SMS);
- Download the IEC mobile app and enter your ID number;
- Check at your local IEC office
All Covid-19 protocol will be put in place and citizens must wear a mask when entering any venue. Sanitisers and wipes will be provided at registration stations.
The online portal for voter registration will remains open until the date of proclamation of the elections, which is expected on Monday, September 20.
