Fabulous reads – Addictive thriller hits the mark

Book review - What She Found in the Woods by Josephine Angelini.

IN this page-turner of a thriller, Josephine Angelini draws the reader deeper into the woods along with her protagonist, Magdelena, who is trailing in the wake of a scandal that put her in hot water with the law.

Dazed and over medicated after having a nervous break down, Magdalena has broken all ties with her charmed life as one of New York’s elite. Betrayed by her private school friends, and cast off by her parents, she has been banished to her grandparents in the Pacific Northwest town for the summer.

Soon, old friends crop up in the sleepy, holiday town and draw Magdelena into a fast-paced party world. Feeling obligated to keep up appearances, she plays along, but her heart is in the woods where she takes refuge in the hiking trails, quiet streams and Bo, a mysterious man who is living off the land with his family.

Danger lurks as Magdelena discovers Bo’s father is on the run from the law. She claws through the medicated-daze of her clouded mind and questions what she saw. As police discover dead bodies in the wood, Magdelena finds herself with blood-soaked hands and no recollection as to how it got there.

This novel is so cleverly written and gripping and the story unfolds with deep suspense and copious amounts of suspicion as you slowly begin to question Magdalena’s fragmented mind. The plot unravels bit by bit as the protagonist recalls fragments of her private school life while she recounts her summer in the woods.
