Tips to reduce your fuel consumption

The economy is tightening up and with fluctuating fuel prices, one has to consider all and sundry in an effort to stretch every litre of fuel.

We thought these tips would help.

1. Plan your journey. Familiarise yourself with the most efficient route to your chosen destination; either the most direct or fast-flowing, or routes devoid of steep inclines or mountain passes, also avoiding heavy traffic where possible.
2. Unnecessary idling of your car’s engine should be avoided.
3. Stay within the legal speed limit or as per what conditions allow. By reducing speed with just 20km/h, you can generate a 20% saving on consumption.
4. Adapt your acceleration and de-acceleration to be smooth and gentle and keep the revs within the “green band” – 2500-3000r/min range.
5. Be sure to maintain your vehicle as per the manufacturer parameters and keep the engine optimally tuned.
6. Drive only when necessary. Walk to nearby shops or shopping centres.
7. Engage your car’s cruise control on the open road. It does indeed save fuel.
8. Remove all accessories, like roof racks, when not actually using it. It will improve the drag-efficiency of your vehicle.
9. Use your air conditioner sparingly.
10. Ensure the correct tyre pressure by regularly checking it, and preferably do this in the early mornings.
11. Ensure regular inspection of your car’s air filters, especially if you drive on gravel roads. Blocked air filters will prevent adequate air intake, thus decreasing engine performance, and may possibly lead to engine damage.
12. Keep your windows closed. Not only does this reduce drag, it also increases your personal safety.
13. Anticipate possible traffic challenges before they occur. Keep the correct following distance and increase this in wet or misty conditions.
14. Replace tyres before they reach the minimum tread level.
15. It is always a good idea to calculate your fuel consumption on a regular basis. A sudden increase should not be ignored and remedial steps should be taken immediately.
