Say hello to BMW’s new M3 and M4 models

Sorry purists, no manual transmissions for you.

Following a number of teasers, BMW has finally revealed its new M3 and M4 Coupe brutal models that are slated to launch locally towards the middle of 2021.

The new BMW M3 and M4 Coupe are launching in two variants, standard and Competition flavours.

The standard models are powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline straight six engine that sends power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The Competition variants see the power outputs bumped to a whopping 375 kW and 650 Nm plus an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and 3 shift programs.

So here’s the thing. South Africans are not getting the standard M3 and M4 Coupe models as well as the manual gearbox, only the Competition variants are headed here.

However, it is worth knowing that the standard M3 and M4 hurdle from a standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 4.2 seconds while the M3 and M4 Competition models get the same job done in 3.9 seconds.

According to BMW SA, the Competition modes will later feature an M xDrive system that will send all that 375 kW oomph to all four wheels and that will see them completing the 100 km/h sprint time in less than 3.9 seconds.

The M xDrive-equipped M3 and M4 Competition models will also spawn the Active M Differential and 3 selectable drive modes: 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD when they arrive later in 2021.

Stopping prowess comes courtesy of M Compound brakes that can be upgraded.

If you are well-monied, there is an optional M Race Track Package for both the M3 and M4 models that reduces the weight of the cars by around 25kg and that is achieved by making use of M Carbon ceramic brakes, special M light-alloys and M Carbon bucket seats.

Both the M3 and M4 models feature the new BMW oversized kidney grille, sculpted wheel arches, prominent side sill extensions with attachments to the front and rear aprons, carbon-fibre roof with aerodynamically optimised fins, plus rear spoiler and familiar M tailpipe pairs.

Only the BMW M3 Competition Sedan and the BMW M4 Competition Coupe will be introduced to the South African market. Both models will be introduced in the first half of 2021.
