Fabulous reads – Historical family drama will grip you

Book review - A Lute of Eleven Strings by Jane Kirsten.

A Lute of Eleven Strings, Jane Kirsten, ISBN: 9781 9284 55165

THE book, A Lute of Eleven Strings by Jane Kirsten is a wonderful family saga you can really absorb yourself in.

Based in Paris 1505, it describes the tragedy of the Catholics trying to stop the illegal reformation movement lead by the Huguenot heretics, and the effect on the lives of all concerned.

Bookshop owner, Arnoul De La Porte supports Luther and the reformation movement, but by choosing this belief system, he put himself and his family in danger. His grandson, Luc, has to leave Paris in a hurry due to a betrayal and flee to Flanders to relatives with his Protestant mentor’s daughter, Sibylle.

The violence and bloodshed increases and the De La Porte family lose members, but remain strong and survive. Ironically, at one stage, it is a Catholic family who helps them escape the wrath of warring Catholic soldiers.

This story-line follows the generations and the historical facts of this era and are both interesting and informative. It is a bit of a heavy read that would appeal to seasoned readers who enjoy a good historical novel with great characters.
