Fabulous reads: Book echoes SA’s democratic sporting achievements

Book review - Vuvuzela Dawn by Luke Alfred and Ian Hawkey.

Vuvuzela Dawn, Luke Alfred and Ian Hawkey, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781770106611

VUVUZELA Dawn celebrates 25 pivotal South African sports stories that were made during the 25 years of democracy.

This co-authored effort by Luke Alfred and Ian Hawkey is perfect for sports fans who want to relive some of our country’s most talked about sporting moments.

The book is curated in a museum-like manner and commemorates our iconic sporting achievements in a non-clichéd way.

Many will remember these historic moments and appreciate just how dynamic the story-telling is.

Expect a journalistic writing formula rather than the usual biographical style.

This form helps keep the story fresh in the reader’s memory.

ALSO READ: Fabulous reads – Book overflows with historical truth

These stories dip deep into a well of detail and the authors are certainly not afraid to move into SA’s more scandalous sports stories.

The Hansie Cronje saga that shocked the cricketing world is a great example and was probably my favourite slice of this meaty book.

It is an engaging read and is structured in a way that helps the reader appreciate the ups and downs of South African sports and the country’s progression on the international scene, post isolation.

What I found most intriguing was how Alfred and Hawkey were able to separate and categorise the book into five different sections; The Honeymoon Phase; The Innovators; The Hard Times; Celebrating Afresh; and Higher Faster, Longer, the last phase of the book.
