Fabulous reads – Teen novel brings life’s gritty realness to the fore

Book review - On the Come Up by Angie Thomas.

On the Come Up, Angie Thomas, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9780062498571

WALK the crime ridden streets of a neighbourhood in the USA in this coming-of-age story that will easily immerse you into the world of 16-year-old Bri.

She traverses two worlds as she aims to achieve her big dreams while growing up in a gangster’s paradise.

Battling prejudice at her private art school, Bri hopes to make it out of her neighbourhood one day and land a record deal as a rap artist.

She’s a skilled wordsmith and a master of rhythm. She can come up with raps on the spot but when she gets her big break, she freezes. Bri navigates the harsh realities of a world rife with violence and gangs – the same thugs who shot and killed her father, a rapping legend.

As her mother, a recovering addict struggles to keep food on the table and pay the rent, Bri lands a deal that could save her family. The question on everyone’s lips: can a girl from a lowly neighbourhood really trust anyone?

It is a brilliant book and I would definitely recommend it.-
