Entertainment recommendation and reviews – movies, music and podcasts  

This week's entertainment reviews feature three art-house dramas, alternative albums and local podcasts.

Movies : 

Hot Summer Nights (2018): This coming of age flick, written and directed by Elijah Bynum stars Timothee Chalamet. Chalamet’s character is a sheltered teen who goes to visit his aunt in the summer of 1991 and he gets way over his head by selling drugs to the locals and tourists alongside a local criminal, who has a younger sister that falls in love with Chalamet’s character.

The End of the Tour (2015): Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel star in this drama about Rolling Stone journalist, David Lipsky (Eisenberg’s character) who interviews writer, David Foster Wallace (Segel’s character) about his book that has gained him lot’s of fame, which he struggles to come into grips with. This flick is a true story and shines a light on David Foster Wallace’s mental health issues. 

Native Son (2019): This novel adaptation, of the the same name sees a young man based in Chicago, who comes from a poor background, has his life completely changes after he gets an incredible job opportunity to work for an affluent family as their driver. This flick features two up-and-coming stars, Ashton Sanders and Margaret Quelley who share a great on-screen chemistry. 

 

Music

Darkie Fiction (Endaweni, 2020) : The alternative kwaito duo have dropped their first album and their first project since the smashing EP, Sobabini. This project once again sees this talented duo merge neo-soul, hip-hop and kwaito. The album has seven tracks and runs for a short 24 minutes, which allows the listener to play the project on loop. Available on all streaming platforms. 

Favourite Single: Endaweni 

Folk9 (Chinese Banquet, 2018): The Bangkok based indie quartet, offer listeners a relaxed but sonically pleasing listening experience on this album. This album runs for 39 minutes with 11 tracks and the songs easily transition from one to the next that could see the listener enjoying it so much that they lose track of time. Available on all streaming platforms. 

Favourite Single: Mermaid 

 

Knxwledge (1988, 2020): One of the most underrated producers in hip-hop’s latest offering features a lot of samples, random clips – which can easily be compared to his beat tapes in the past. This is his second album and it’s named after the year he was born. The album is reminiscent over his past and shapes it well according to his sound. It’s almost an ode to RnB and olden day rap. 

Favourite single: Makeitliveforever

Podcast

Sunday Service: This podcast is hosted by the Eboka siblings, Tinuke and Elu. Tinuke is a fashion creative and Elu is a music producer and a film composer. The two creative siblings speak to industry experts and professionals in various creative fields like, Fine Art, music, fashion and beauty. 

 

Almost Perfect: Hosted by one of Durban’s best comedians and music journalist, Bob Perfect interviews the likes of, Brooklyn based artist, Louis De Villiers, Rapper/Graphic Designer, ByLwansta and DJ/Producer, Muzi among other South African’s most hardworking creatives. The podcast can be streamed on multiple platforms and won the 2019 Durban Creative Award for best Radio Show/Podcast 

The Group Chat: Fashion creative, Emily Oberg hosts this contemporary issues podcast with her friends in the creative industry and multimedia Journalists, Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins and Speedy Morman. The podcast is centered around conversations from the three friends’ actual group chat. The podcast can be streamed on Tidal
