WHAT would you do if you were to wake up and find out you are from an ancient family of monster chasers?
Abazingeli Bezithunzi is a series of four books centered around a race against time to defeat a seemingly never-ending tide of monsters and the rescue of one of the protagonist’s mother.

The scary and exciting book introduces us to a brave little girl, Nom and a boy, Zithembe. While the duo may stay in the same yard, they were never close until Zithembe saves Nom from a nasty group of girls.

For their daring rescue, they need to recover Zithembe’s missing knife. To do this they need to venture into the dreamworld to the Lake of Memories, find Zithembe’s grandmother’s dream and learn the location of the elusive knife.

To enter this mystical world, the shadow chasers use special knives that allow them make wishes when they are in the dreamworld. The reason they so desperately need to get hold of Zithembe’s knife is so that their combined powers increase exponentially. During their quest to save the world, they enlist help from a few colourful characters.

In the second book, they meet Zithembe’s older cousin, Rosy, who is a more experienced monster-chaser. The three soon realise they need each other to travel through the dreamworld and win the war.

Book three sees them partner with a very helpful ghost who gives them advice on how to retrieve a knife from the scariest of scary monsters, Oyo.

In the fourth book, the Shadow Chasers face off against the General, the most dangerous being among the army of monsters. Once she is defeated, her army will fall into an eternal slumber and the world will be safe.

Abazingeli Bezithunzi is a children’s fantasy book and, while it can get quite scary, it is beyond exciting to read. I would recommend it for children older than 10 years. On the other hand, my uncle, who is a book fanatic, was not convinced that this should be a children’s book as there is a little bit of violence.

I love that we are in a time where my children are able to walk into a shop and purchase a fantasy book that is written in their home tongue, Zulu. Go out and grab the the series for your young ones and find out if these brave little monster chasers win the fight against the almighty General.
