Designers filled with fashion D’Urbania

Two local fashion design students take on menswear for their final-year fashion exhibition.

DUT Fashion and Textile Design, local, third-year students, Malcolm Teboho Mokgope and Nicola Colyn exhibited their final year looks at the DUT fashion show that took place from the 2 to 4 October at the Station Urban Event Space.

The show is part of their third year project and they spent three quarters of the year planning and working for this final showcase.

The students were given a theme, D’URBANIA  (Durban), and they had to create six outfits/looks ranging from menswear and womenswear to kiddies or a combination of all three.

Mokgope won two awards, The Johnsons Workwear Award and the Menswear Award.

He explained his interpretation of the theme: “The name of my range is GOMORRA. Since our given theme was ‘D’URBANIA’, I drew inspiration from Point Road. I was trying to tell a story of the road using clothes.

“I also incorporated the broken buildings on the uShaka side as deconstruction in my design,” Mokgope said.

On trend styles for men

Colyn also created menswear collection as she wanted to expand her portfolio and challenge herself in a different sector.

“My looks were inspired by the men of Durban. I believe that even though men’s fashion has evolved it still isn’t given the same accreditation as women’s wear,” said Colyn.

In Durban, men like to dress for comfort for the climate, however, their clothing choices aren’t always stylish or on trend.

“I designed my range to inspire the men of Durban where they can still don comfortable clothes as well as be stylish.” said the Kloof based designer.

‘‘I challenged myself to ensure my entire range would be interchangeable – providing a man with a wardrobe that could be worn to any occasion. I made my range personal by printing on a few of the items, using prints designed and hand-crafted by me.

‘‘I accessorised the ramp models looks with a sense of humour, showing people that life doesn’t always have to be serious,” Colyn said.
