We mourn our children

"If this is hard for us, as a community to process, it is impossible to imagine the trauma and pain their mother must be going through."

AGAINST a backdrop of brutal xenophobic and gender-based violence protests, the Highway Mail joins our local community in mourning the tragic deaths of four innocent Wyebank children who were found hanged.

Dark times indeed.

The lives and ambitions of four children were suddenly cut short. If this is hard for us, as a community to process, it is impossible to imagine the trauma and pain their mother must be going through.

Journalist, Sanelisiwe Tsinde, attended the memorial services at the schools and felt the heartache and sadness of family, educators and friends grieving the loss of the four lovely children who respected their teachers and who were doing well, according to the schools.

This tragedy reflects the huge problem of violence against women and children in this country and that it has to stop.

We have to instill that everyone’s right to life and right to live in safety, is respected.

This has begun. Many schools in the Highway area have asked learners to pledge their support for the safety of women and girls. The march in Durban on Saturday was well-supported and noticeably it is the younger men who have shown their solidarity.

Gender-based violence and anti-xenophobia awareness group, Emancipate Africa is organising a march against sexual abuse and xenophobia on Old Main Road in Hillcrest on Saturday, 14 September at noon. Wear red and black! For details, visit @emancipateafrica on Instagram.

The Highway Mail has chosen not to publish photographs of the grieving mother at the PGHS memorial service because showing respect starts here.
