Leap back into Springboks’ history

Take a trip back into the 1937 Sprinkboks' tour of New Zealand at this fantastic fund-raiser talk.

THE YES Trust will host a performance of Michael Charton’s story of the 1937 Springboks’ tour of New Zealand on Thursday, 12 September at St Agnes Church from 6pm.

Michael stumbled upon the story of the 1937 Springboks in a second-hand bookstore on Long Street in Cape Town. This was a chance encounter that has inspired an improbable adventure.

What began as the mundane process of tracking down more material on this tour, soon transformed into something bigger: A journey into the heart and heritage of a unique rivalry within a unique sport.

The year 1937 was special as the Springboks and the All Blacks had, by then, asserted their dominance over the rugby world.

This third encounter between the world’s (then) rugby giants, would be the most anticipated series in the history of the game.

“What would emerge was a very human story containing a carefully woven narrative about a motley crew of farmers, students, teachers, and one unlikely banker. They were, for a moment, freed from the throttling political narrative in South Africa and allowed to express themselves as both rugby players and as human beings,” said Michael.

Tickets are available from Webtickets at www.webtickets.co.za and cost R150 each.

Proceeds will go to the Youth Education and Support Trust, a registered non-profit organisation.
