Fabulous reads – Missing that touch of ‘Wunder’

Book review - Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #2) by Jessica Townsend.

Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #2), Jessica Townsend, ISBN: 9780734418227

I ABSOLUTELY adored the first novel as it was a breath of fresh air in an overpopulated genre.

The second book, while enjoyable, did not hold the same sense of ‘Wunder’.

Morrigan has passed her trials and has been granted access to the Academy, alongside her new teammates. Each has his/her own special Knacks and are assigned a slew of weird and wonderful classes that will enhance their powers, while Morrigan is only granted permission to study two.

The feeling of being sidelined because of the misunderstood Wundersmith power only increases when most of Morrigan’s Unit turns on her when they receive their first piece of blackmail. The threat is very real as it vows to reveal one of the group member’s deadly secrets to the world.

If the secret comes out, they will all face expulsion. Each note forces one of the Unit’s members to do something out of character to ensure the secret stays hidden.

Throughout this, each Unit member has to navigate their way through tests and trials at the Academy to pass.

Feeling alone in the world and with no one willing to help her harness her powers, Morrigan is taken under the wing of the very person feared by everyone in Nevermoor, Wundersmith Ezra Squall.

While the world of Nevermoor is completely wacky and totally bonkers, something about this novel that felt a bit unhinged. At times there was just too much going on at once, almost as if there wasn’t a clear plot line for the story.

Enjoyable, yes. Easily forgettable, sadly, also yes.
