Hillcrest exhibition to celebrate SA fibre artist’s work

The late, Roy Starke to be celebrated at Hillcrest Primary School.

THE work of celebrated South African fibre artist, Roy Starke, who died last year, will be showcased in Hillcrest on 10 August.

A prolific award-winning artist, Starke created exuberant fabric constructions which were painted, stitched, embroidered and embellished.

A member of Fibreworks, an active group of 50 South African fibre and textile artists, Starke bequeathed much of his work to the group.

The Fibreworks group is organising exhibitions of Roy Starke’s work nationally and internationally to give a wide range of people the opportunity to view and possibly buy work from this remarkable and celebrated South African artist.

Fibreworks has donated one of Starke’s quilts to KZN Quilters Guild. Entitled Mantis Moon at Hibberdene, it will be auctioned and the money raised will go towards the 2023 National Quilt Festival to be held in KZN.

The KZN Quilters Guild are holding an Open Day on Saturday, 10 August at Hillcrest Primary School from 9am to 12pm, where about 40 of Starke’s colourful textile creations will be on exhibition.

The guest speaker, Christo Rabie will give a talk and presentation on Roy Starke’s work.

There is a R50 entry fee.
