Fabulous reads: Archenemies is a super sequel

Book review - Archenemies by Marissa Meyer.

Archenemies, Marissa Meyer, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781509888870

IF you love capes, masks, secret identities and all things superhero, then Marissa Meyer’s Archenemies should definitely be one of your next reads.

The novel follows Adrian (aka Sketch) and Nova (aka Insomnia) two fully fledged superheroes in a massive organisation known as the Renegades.

Staying true to the young adult genre, romance slowly blossoms between Nova, who is actually a spy for the super-villain organisation known as the Anarchists, and Adrian, the son of the leader of the Renegades – which unearths some inner turmoil in the duo.

At the same time both protagonists are also grappling with the morality and ethics of a new ‘weapon’ developed by the Renegades to fight the villainous prodigies (people which superpowers).

Nova is also determined to revenge her family, whose deaths she blames on the Renegades, while Adrian is desperate to find out which of the Anarchists murdered his mother, Lady Indomitable.

While Archenemies is the sequel in the series, I personally found it very easy to follow the story – even though I had not read the first book in the series.

The sequel starts out rather slow but knocks your socks off in the last few chapters.

I also found the book to be a fun read with a few really sweet moments between the main characters – without being overly cheesy.

Meyer has a laid back, yet descriptive writing style, painting a vivid picture of the characters, their emotions, expressions and feelings without being monotonous.

If you enjoyed Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Hunger Games, the Divergent series or The Fault in Our Stars you will enjoy this series.
