Fabulous reads: Melissa’s dystopian world makes a welcome return

Book review - The Return by Melissa Delport.

The Return, Melissa Delport, eBook

*spoilers for The Legacy trilogy inbound

THE wait is finally over #TeamReed fans as Melissa Delport has stepped back into her wildly addictive and gritty dystopian universe. While Rebecca Davis may have carried the first trilogy with her hero-like qualities, it’s now time for Morgan to take the front seat – and what an epic ride it is!

It has been a year since Rebecca and her legion of warriors helped liberate thousands from the tyrannical rule of a cruel dictator. While the country rebuilds, an elite crew, Six Squad, continues to scour the countryside for survivors.

Morgan was a fiery, unpredictable and untamed character in the previous novels, in this book, the first of her series, you see a different side of her. She has grown up, matured and is easily likeable and relatable. Her one major flaw, but one she simply cannot control, is her growing attraction for Reed, a man whose heart continues to pine for another woman.

While there is a hint at romance, the book remains true to its predecessors and is filled with intense action scenes and nail-biting suspense. The people of FUSA face an unknown and deadly new enemy. They strike without mercy and any death, civilian or mercenary, is a welcome one. It is up to Six Squad and the loyal members of the Legion to infiltrate their defenses and take them down before it’s too late.

When I learnt that Morgan would be the protagonist, I admit to being both apprehensive and intrigued. Her character, in the first trilogy, wasn’t entirely endearing but she was enjoyable to read. In the year since the FUSA was formed, the protagonist has undergone a myriad of changes, she is mature, decisive, more empathetic and she thinks before she acts. What readers are greeted with is an upgraded, endearing character.

If you are a fan of action, with a touch of romance, set in an epic dystopian world, this series is for you.
