Fabulous reads – To read, or not to read: that is the question

Poems to Live our Life By (chosen and illustrated) by Chris Riddell.

Poems to Live Your Life By, (chosen and illustrated by) Chris Riddell, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781509814374

TRUTH be told, I am not a fan of poetry. For some, the words awaken a piece of their soul. For me, it sets my mind into a state of hibernation and I yearn for a bed and a comfy pillow.

My general bias towards poetry definitely doesn’t mean this book is bad. In fact, there were many poems in this compilation that I thoroughly enjoyed reading: He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven by WB Yeats, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost; Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen; The Minister of Exams by Brian Patten and, my all-time favourite, The Language of Cat by Rachel Rooney.

For poetry fans, this book is sure to have something for everyone as it is split into eight sections that include War and Love to Nature and Family. To top it all off, each carefully selected poem is accompanied by Riddell’s stunning artwork.

At a generous 198 pages, you will find works by classics from William Shakespeare and Rumi to Lewis Carol and more recent, the talented Neil Gaiman.
