Fabulous reads – Novel forces you to look deep within yourself

Book review - The Devil's Highway by Gregory Norminton.

The Devil’s Highway, Gregory Norminton, Jonathan Ball Publishers, ISBN: 9780008243760

THE Devil’s Highway takes the reader on an intriguing journey. Well, three separate journeys, to be exact. We begin with Andagin, an ancient Celt. He lives in harmony with his environment and has a deep respect for nature and his surroundings but finds himself in the midst of an uprising.

We then jump to the present day where we are introduced to Aitch and Harry. A solider returned from Afghanistan and is attempting to readjust to civilian life and a young girl whose archaeologist father is set on preserving the heath.

We then jump to a dystopian type wasteland with three escapees attempt to find their freedom. What ties these three stories together? They’re all set along the same road, a road that has lasted and prevailed through thousands of years of use, despite people and their failures.

This book is a very real look at human behaviour and human nature. Each story is vivid and well described as well as being engaging and thought provoking. It causes the reader to take look objectively at their own surroundings and wonder what was, what will come and how their own actions affect their environment and the world. A poignant and short read.

Norminton is has written five novels as well as two collections of short stories. He is a lecturer of Creative Writing and lives in the UK.
