Fabulous reads – Queenly tale approaches its conclusion

Book review - Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake.

Two Dark Reigns (Three Dark Crowns #3), Kendare Blake, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9780062686145

I WILL be more than sad when this beautifully dark young adult series comes to a close this year.

If you have not read any of the previous novels, do not read ahead. You have been forewarned.

Once doted on by the entire island of Fennbirn, sisters, Arsinoe and Mirabella, are forced to flee to the mainland. Back home they are branded traitor queens but in this strange and unexplored land they are nothing, no one. Even as their powers weaken day by day, the pair still hope to forge a new life for themselves.

Arsinoe’s dreams call her back to the island, a pull that soon becomes too strong for her to ignore.

Back on Fennbirn, Katherine begins her precarious reign. Even with the crown immortalised as a tattoo on her brow, the people whisper. The whispers grow louder still as the mist that once protected the island creeps onto the land and kills innocent civilians.

Not wanting to be stuck under the rule of another poisoner, the people grow restless. The unusual deaths of their loved ones only adds fuel to the fire. When they hear of a prophecy declaring Jules Milone as a possible successor, they flock to take up arms and join her rebellion.

While the ending wasn’t a cliffhanger, I am wholly intrigued to see how Blake chooses to end off one of the darkest YA series I have ever read. Ever. It is Game of Thrones for the youth.
