Fabulous reads – Romantic suspense novel doesn’t lift off

Book review - Accidental Heroes by Danielle Steel.

Accidental Heroes, Danielle Steel, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781509800469

HAVING never read a Danielle Steel novel before, I was looking forward to getting stuck into this book to see what millions of fans across the globe were gushing about. I was expecting something light, not-too-serious with a generous serving of romance – at least that’s what Steel fans in my circle of friends assured me I’d be getting.

Sadly it didn’t work for me despite the blurb on the cover describing Accidental Heroes as a heart-stopping thriller about ordinary men and women who embark on a journey they will never forget.

In truth, my heart never skipped its slow, steady beat. I blame years of reading hard-core, page-turning thrillers, mysteries and horrendous crime stories. I found the pace of Accidental Heroes too slow moving and to be brutally honest, I never even got to finishing the book.

The story just did not grab me and I found it too predictable. By the end of the first couple of chapters you pretty much knew where the story was going.

But, my feelings aside, I’m sure that millions of Danielle Steel fans will disagree, after all she is one of the world’s most popular authors with almost a billion novels sold.

In essence, the novel centres around security agent, Bernice Adams, who finds a postcard of the Golden Gate Bridge while working at New York’s JFK airport shortly after a routine plane departs.

Questions arise. Who left the postcard behind, which flight is that person on, and what does it mean?

Passengers on the flight have no idea that one person among them is planning something terrible and they come together to help avert a tragedy at the eleventh hour.

For Danielle Steel fans, this is sure to be another best-selling winner for their beloved author.
