WIN: Fabulous reads – Wartime diary breathes life into a story of resilience

Book review - An Unquiet Place by Clare Houston.

An Unquiet Place, Clare Houston, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781415210246

Clare’s debut novel tells the story of Hannah Harrison, a young woman who escapes her life in Cape Town for a fresh start, working in a small-town bookshop in the picturesque Eastern Free State.

The story takes a turn when Hannah finds a diary in a box of old books in the bookshop. The diary, penned by Rachel Badenhorst, tells of a girl separated from her family in the South African War and gives an account of life in a concentration camp.

Hannah is captivated by the girl’s courage and endurance, and sets out to uncover what happened to Rachel. What she doesn’t foresee is that her interest in this piece of history will stir up the more recent grief of Alistair Barlow, a local farmer who is struggling to come to terms with the tragic death of his wife.

While Clare Houston’s novel unearths losses old and new with the lightest of touches, it also shows how love and kindness can help as we look for ways to soothe the past.
