Fabulous reads – Slip back into lovely Lou’s life

Book review - After You by Jojo Moyes.

After You (Me before You #2), Jojo Moyes, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781405909075)

APPREHENSIVE is definitely one of the top words used to describe my feelings when I picked this book up. This boiled down to the simple fact that the ending for Me Before You felt so final.

There should have been no possible way there was enough story left in Lou to fill another 400-page novel that would entertain me. I also thought it would be impossible for Jojo Moyes to create a love interest that could outshine the vastness that was Will. She proved me wrong. So wrong in fact that she also wrote a third novel. Colour me pink and call me daft but now I was also highly intrigued.

It’s been 18 months since Will underwent his assisted suicide and the lovely Lou is still picking up the pieces of her broken heart and shattered soul. She may have her own tiny slice of London she calls home and a job to keep on top up of her bills, but she is far from whole.

The book has an intriguing start and Jojo handles dealing with death and grief with quite an adept hand. Anyone that has lost a loved one will easily slide into Lou’s shoes.

The topic is heavy and the book hits a bit of a slag a few chapters in and I wondered whether I should just give it up altogether. I’m really glad that I didn’t. Another whirlwind is about to enter Lou’s life and it will do so with the most dramatic effects.

The novel is filled with the delightful humour I remember from the first book, sometimes literally bursting out laughing at the classic one-liners.

Moving on is a difficult topic to broach, especially when Jojo masterfully crafted such a charismatic character that fans absolutely fell in love with.

To the long-time fans of the series, just as Lou makes her way forward in an attempt to create her own happiness, you too will slowly heal along side her with each one of her stumbling steps to her final destination.
