Fabulous reads – Fletcher’s finale turns up the heat

Book review - The Battlemage by Taran Matharu.

The Battlemage, Taran Matharu, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781444924268

TARAN Matharu’s third book in this series is an astounding page-turner.

It was only a few years ago that I came across the first book in the Summoner series, The Novice.

It was a real treat as it was simple and easy to read and filled with magic, beasts and topical issues such as racism (albeit with dwarves and elves), sexism, politics and power. While these were just subtle undertones in a much deeper storyline, they blended in seamlessly to this rich and diverse world.

To see how much Matharu and his characters have developed over the course of this three-book journey is astounding.

While the writing style remains uncomplicated, the strength of his storytelling has increased ten fold.

I climbed back into this world with relative ease, remembering the names, quirks and motives of each character from the get go. Sarah J Maas could take some tips from this lad.

Fletcher’s journey continues mere blinks after the cliff-hanger ending of The Inquisition.

The summoner and his gang are stuck in the ether after their escape from the savage orc kingdom. With only hours to survive, the group need to find a way back to Hominum before a war breaks out between the great races.

It may have a bit of a slow start as finale’s go, but after a few chapters you best buckle yourself in for a wild ride.

This ia a book that in a long time, has an ending that I can 100 per cent agree with.

Each character’s storyline was tied up with a neat, little bow and readers will close the book with a sense of triumph, completion and a hearty grin.
