Fabulous reads – Explore the rise of women

Book review - Rebel Voices by Eve Lloyd Knight and Louise Kay Stewart.

Rebel Voices, Eve Lloyd Knight and Louise Kay Stewart, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781526300232

THE cover is as almost as striking as the numerous stories contained within its bindings. It contains a brief history of the fight women have taken up to ensure their voices are heard.

The suffragist movement kicked off in New Zealand in 1893 and the waves of change slowly crept across the globe, with Australia and Nordic countries. The most alarming pages include highlights from countries that only recently gave the power of the vote to women, some as recent as 2015.

While paging through the book you can’t help but feel a mix of emotions, happiness and pride at what has been achieved by women globally but also shock and anger at the world that these movements needed to take place at all. Why were women ever seen as inferior? What and who decided they were ‘less than’ that they not deserve to have a voice?

It is a wonderful coffee table book as the stories it contains are quick, interesting reads and is a great way to start up discussions and possibly a few healthy debates. The artwork is vibrant, eye-catching and fresh without taking away from the text.
